Profile of the Organization : e-Kavi Center Charity Fund Inc.

Jaffna University Graduates Association-Victoria Inc. (JUGA-Vic Inc.) was inaugurated in 2014 in Melbourne, Australia as an alumni association of University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. JUGA-Victoria Inc along with Lions club of Colombo Grand Circle started e-Kalvi program in 2016.

The Sri Lankan Civil war lasted almost 30 years and came to an end in 2009. Civilian suffering from civil war extends well beyond the period of active warfare. The impact hit the community in several forms including legal and illegal migration for political and economic reasons. Several thousand people fled the country by small fishing boats to other countries including Australia. Due to the mass brain drain there were shortages of teachers mainly for mathematics, science and English. This teacher-shortage caused huge examination failures in the General Certification of Education (Ordinary Level) examination (GCE O/L) for which mathematics is a compulsory subject. Therefore, we started a program called e-Learning project also known as e-Kalvi project to address the teacher vacancies.

In this program, students study mathematics, science and English subjects as video-based e-lessons. These lessons were prepared by well-trained teachers and they were recorded as videos in accordance with Sri Lankan curriculum. e-lessons were stored in USB memory sticks. Laptops, multimedia projector, projector screen, tablets and a multifunction copier are provided for each center in order to implement e-learning classes. Our aim is to catalyze socio-economic change in the North, East and Up-country of Sri Lanka through the Education of underprivileged children.

We recently established a Memorandum of Understanding with University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka for the successful implementation of the e-learning programs in the remote regions. Engineering undergraduate students and information technology staff will be assisting in teaching and technical troubleshooting in this project. A community-based committee will be supervising each center. Parents and/or volunteers will be on duty during all student activities. Students attendance and progress will be monitored and recorded by the community-based committee and the report will be sent to the overseeing panel appointed by JUGA-Victoria Inc
